HISTORY

The Pro-Muriqui Association was founded in 2000 to meet the specific demands of the PHVA Muriqui to organize the scientific research and conservation of spider monkeys-the-south in the state of Sao Paulo. More recently (2007), the Association Pro-Muriqui completed the first version of its institutional strategic plan

MISSION

Maintain viable populations of wild primate Muriqui South-to future human generations, through the development of scientific research, environmental education and forest restoration in the Hall of Biodiversity of the Serra do Mar, in order to contribute to the preservation of remaining natural forest Atlantic to protect the water sources of drinking water in large urban centers in Southeast Brazil.

VIEW

Establishment of a continuous flow, multidirectional and multi-disciplinary knowledge among all actors involved in the conservation of spider monkeys and the Atlantic Forest in São Paulo, it turns into awareness of humanity to the importance of biodiversity and effective conservation actions of tropical forests to safeguard drinking water available to supply large urban centers and well-being of future generations of human populations.

PROFESSIONAL EXPERTISE

 The Asociación Pro Muriqui develop field research on primates from the wild spider monkeys in areas of critical habitat for species conservation. It is the only organization in the country specializing in research activities in the field-spider monkey-south in nature. It has trained and specialized staff to locate, track and monitor social groups systematically wild spider monkeys.

We use the scientific method to record the natural history, ecology, behavior and physiology of spider monkeys in order to develop and promote conservation tools for spider monkeys and other species of primates or mammals. In 10 years of existence, through the generation of scientific expertise and / or the general public, the Association Pro-Muriqui won national and international credibility, contributing substantially to the dissemination of the importance of primate Muriqui as flagship species of international conservation of Atlantic Forest primates in general.

PERFORMANCE

Right now, the priority focuses executives of the Association Pro-Muriqui are:

- Coordination and ICMBio focal point of several actions and goals of the PAN and PAN Muriqui Mammals of the Atlantic, with the ICMBio for the ESP

- Coordination, attracting national and international resources, training of students and maintenance of project activities with long-term muriquis PECB in the south, the longest continuously running project in the country since 1986

- Planning and implementation of population surveys and geographical distribution of spider monkeys in the southern state of Sao Paulo (national priority due to high% of native vegetation cover, and contain the largest populations of the species in Brazil) – 1 Goal Muriqui PAN.

- Implementation of monitoring programs Muriqui South-native forest areas in the corporate sector Pulp and Paper:

  • Serra do Mar – Bertioga
  • Serra de Paranapiacaba – São Miguel Arcanjo e Capão Bonito
