Status of Species

The genus Brachyteles is classified as critically endangered and there are two species:

  • Brachyteles arachnoides, South Muriqui (found in the states of São Paulo, south of Rio de Janeiro and the northeast of Paraná)
  • Brachyteles hypoxanthus, North Muriqui (east of Minas Gerais and Espírito Santo)
Classified as endangered and critically endangered respectively (Baillie et al. 2004).
